• Class meets:
• MWF  10 am, 343 Altgeld Hall
• Prerequisites: Officially either honors section of math 416 or MATH 415 together with an honors section of MATH 347. In practice, ability to understand and write proofs. In any case consent of the department is required.

We will study properties of integers, group theory and ring theory.

• Homework: Homework problems are to be assigned once a week. They are due the following week in class. No late homework will be accepted.
• Attendance: of lectures/discussions is expected.

• Exams: There will be quizzes, two midterms and a final. All exams will be closed book.

  The midterms will take place on September 28 and November 2

  The final, according to the non-combined final examination schedule is to take place on 1:30:00– 4:30 PM, Wednesday, December 14

  Requests for a make-up exam require a serious documentation and are almost never granted. I will drop the lowest homework and quiz scores.

• Grade: The formula for the course grade is roughly as follows:
• final exam = 35 %
• 2 midterms at 20 % each = 40%
• homework, quizzes = 25%
There is no plan for a curve.   However, if you do significantly better on the final than your course average grade, I will take that into account.
